Qualcomm, one of the world’s biggest chipset companies, is bringing ISRO’s GPS alternative to millions of Android phones in India. Xiaomi and Realme are likely to be the first adopters of the new NavIC system.

Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) is coming soon to millions of Android phones in India in an attempt to replace GPS.
A report by the Hindustan Times says that the NavIC satellite technology is designed to deliver precise location information to Indian consumers and even of neighboring countries.

San Diego-based chipmaker Qualcomm is soon going to use 'Made In India' NavIC technology in all future Android smartphones. The NavIC stands for NAVigation with Indian Constellation. It is designed by the ISRO.
The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), also called NavIC is reportedly on par with US-based GPS, Russia's Glonass and Galileo developed by Europe. NavIC has seven satellites. The satellites' range covers India and a distance of 1,500 km from India's borders. A usual GPS includes 24 satellites.

The chipset company said it has for the first time introduced supports up to seven satellite constellations concurrently, including the use of all of NavIC’s operating satellites, in its Qualcomm Location suite. The integration will help deliver more accurate location performance, faster time-to-first-fix (TTFF) position acquisition, and improved robustness of location-based services, it added.
“ISRO is satisfied with the efforts of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. towards incorporating NavIC and we urge OEMs to leverage it for future handset launches in India,” ISRO chairman Dr. K Sivan.
